Step-by-Step – Two Harbors Ford  to your home
A guide to streamlining your automobile purchase.

  1. Make a decision on exactly which vehicle is for you. Make sure the vehicle is admissible and can be modified to meet Canadian requirements by checking the Transport Canada’s List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States. Be very specific, as it will help streamline the process. We need to know things such as:
             a. Make
             b. Model
             c. Year
             d. 2x4, 4x4, AWD
             e. Color
             f. Transmission (Automatic/Manual)
             g. Any other options you need to have on your vehicle.
             h. Amount that you are willing to spend on the perfect vehicle
  2. Get into contact with Dave Houle at Two Harbors regarding the vehicle you have chosen. See if it is in-stock, if not Two Harbors Ford will get the vehicle in-stock with a minimal non-refundable deposit.
  3. Complete all paperwork regarding the sale; arrange payment, and vehicle pickup time.
  4. Following this, you will receive the vehicle title, bill of sale, sales receipts and recall clearance letter.
  5. When you receive this information, you will need to fax in a copy of your driver’s license, the bill of sale, and the vehicle title to the US border crossing which you intend to cross. This needs to be done at least 72 hours before you intend to cross.
  6. Arrange for insurance on the vehicle.
  7. Now it is time to schedule an appointment and make the drive to Two Harbors, MN. When you arrive, verify that the VIN on the bill of sale matches the one on your vehicle. Also, make sure that there is a North American compliant sticker on the vehicle. This is usually located on the beam of the driver’s door. Ask Dave if you need assistance.
  8. Drive to the US border crossing that you faxed your information to, and identify yourself with your passport and driver’s license. They will check the vehicle title, bill of sale, and the VIN number on the vehicle. All should be good, and they will stamp your vehicle’s title to release it to Canadian customs.
  9. Stop at Canadian customs, again identifying yourself with driver’s license and passport. Tell them you are importing the vehicle. They will have you pull in and park to go fill out Vehicle Import Form 1.(Which they provide)
  10. You will then have to pay your RIV fee. ($195+GST[6%]) + $100 fee if you vehicle has Air Conditioning, a possible emissions excise and possible duty if the vehicle was not built in North America. (Please have your Credit Card in hand for this step, as Canadian Border Patrol does not accept checks or cash.
  11. When payment has been made, they will verify your insurance, stamp your Vehicle Import Form 1 and you will be allowed to pass through.
  12. Within 10 days of submitting Vehicle Import Form 1 at the border, Canadian customs will send you Vehicle Import Form 2 – Federal Inspection
  13. You have 45 days from the day that you submitted to get any necessary modifications done to your vehicle, and have it inspected at Canadian Tire.
  14. When you bring the vehicle to get inspected, bring all supporting documents with you such as title, bill of sale, Vehicle Import Form 1, Vehicle Import Form 2 and the outstanding recall letter.
  15. Canadian Tire will do all of the required inspections free of charge as per the RIV program.
  16. When the vehicle passes the inspection, they will put a sticker on the driver’s side door frame stating that your vehicle is Canadian Safety compliant. They will fill out your Vehicle Import Form 2 and provide you with all of the necessary paperwork to register the vehicle in your province.
  17. You can now take it right over to your provincial vehicle licensing office along with all of the paperwork you’ve accumulated to get it registered. There you will pay the provincial sales tax on the sale price of the vehicle.
